Yesterday, I had a day I'd been looking forward to for so long. I wasn't planning on blogging about it, but it turned out to be even better, nicer, more exciting than expected! Not only did I make a trip to the south of The Netherlands, also did I go back 100 years in time. Or so it seemed...
I went to the south of The Netherlands to search for new wooden blocks to work with. I wanted special ones and have some made. A block is a necessity in millinery, because a milliner molds the material over a block to give it shape (and size).
Being at the supplier who makes my hat blocks, I had a lot (!) of choice. I already new some shapes I'd like to purchase, but she had a new collection of blocks of which I couldn't resist to pick at least one. I don't do to well in decision making when searching for materials to work with. So after a couple of hours the owner made in even more difficult for me. She told me we could also go to a friend of hers who makes aluminum hat blocks. He would have more shapes and perhaps also the particular ones I was searching for.
I agreed to make the drive down there. And there it was, when I felt like stepping out of a time machine being back a 100 years in time! This man had the most amazing collection - more of a huge treasure - with shapes, blocks, antique millinery equipment and dozens of machines for unique techniques. I started treasure seeking in cabinets and the big piles of blocks and found some gems!
In a couple of weeks my order will be delivered to the Eudia atelier. I'm excited to start working with my new blocks, creating new shapes and designing new models! Can't wait to show everyone!
